A business jet bound for the Bahamas fell from 35,000 feet onto a road in Greenacres, Florida, killing all nine aboard. We play the crew's calls, from the ice to the mayday, and lay out what the NTSB looks at next. Watch A Learjet fell from 35,000 feet onto a Florida road, killing nine (7 min), with captions The stories A crater in Military Trail That is Military Trail in Greenacres, Florida, a busy road in Palm Beach County, on Sunday afternoon. At about 12:50, a business jet came down nose first right here, beside a mobile home park. Nine aboard, none hurt on the ground All nine people on the jet were killed. Remarkably, no one on the ground was reported hurt. But about 600 neighbors had to leave their homes that night. The jet and the trip The jet was a Learjet 60, a small business jet built for two pilots and up to eight passengers. This one was 22 years old. It left Austin a little after 10:30 that morning, bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Who was aboard has not been released. The other side That is the crew talking to air traffic control in Miami, cruising at 35,000 feet. They report ice they call manageable, moderate turbulence, and then rain. They ask to climb to 37,000 feet to get above it, and the controller clears them. Some posts online say severe icing, but on the tape the crew calls it manageable. The other side Seconds later, the mayday. Ten thousand feet a minute, then an overspeed at twenty thousand. The controller stays on the frequency, telling the crew he is there with them. We stopped the recording before its final seconds. How fast it fell Here is how fast it fell. The crew called 10,000 feet a minute, then 20,000. Flight data show up to 30,000, and Flightradar24 more than 32,000. The FAA put it at about 350 feet a second, faster than the jet was built to fly. DeSantis: "like a missile coming down" Governor Ron DeSantis was at the scene within hours. He said it was like a missile coming down, with debris going everywhere, and asked for prayers for the families. No one on the ground was reported hurt. Commissioner Flores: 600 people need shelter That is Joel Flores, the county commissioner for this district. The mobile home park sits right behind the crash site. He said about 600 neighbors needed a shelter that night, with the Red Cross standing by. The other side Flores said the crater cut into Military Trail, and he does not see that side of the road open for 30 days. The road is closed from Cresthaven Boulevard to 10th Avenue North, and a nearby high school closed Monday. What happens next The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with the FAA assisting. It scheduled a media briefing in West Palm Beach for Monday. A preliminary report is expected in about 30 days. A probable cause usually takes 12 to 24 months. What is known, and what is not What we know: nine people were killed, the crew reported ice, turbulence and rain, and the jet fell beyond its design limits. What we do not know: who they were, who ran the flight, and what failed. An expert told AP icing and turbulence could have played a part, but investigators rule nothing out. Nine lives, and a neighborhood waiting for answers Nine people died, and a neighborhood is waiting for answers. The tape tells us what the crew faced. What failed is the NTSB's question to answer. Minutes earlier the crew told air traffic control they were managing ice in moderate turbulence, then picked up rain and asked to climb. Seconds after the climb was approved they declared a mayday, falling at 10,000 and then 20,000 feet a minute. No one on the ground was reported hurt, but about 600 neighbors had to leave a mobile home park behind the crash site, and Military Trail may stay closed for 30 days.
