Electronic Arts just closed BioWare, and the reason isn't only the games. Watch EA shut BioWare. Follow the money. (3 min), with captions The stories BioWare is closing It's official. BioWare is closing, and early development on the next Mass Effect is ending. Those are BioWare's own words. And the studio added: there is nothing easy about writing them. What EA cut Electronic Arts cut about 400 jobs, roughly 3% of the company. About 50 of them at BioWare, a studio that's been making games since 1995. Who they are BioWare made Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Electronic Arts makes Madden, EA Sports FC and The Sims. It's one of the biggest game publishers in the world. So why close a 31-year-old studio? So why close a 31-year-old studio? Follow the money. The buyout In September 2025, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners agreed to buy EA. Shareholders took $210 a share. On August 4, the deal closed at about $55 billion. And on October 21, the cuts came. Who owns EA now Who owns EA now? Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, with 93.4%. Silver Lake has 5.5%, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners, 1.1%. $55 billion, mostly borrowed Here's why it matters. It was a leveraged buyout: most of the $55 billion was borrowed, and EA itself has to pay it back. That left EA with about $18 billion of debt. The debt math Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reports the interest alone is about $1.8 billion a year. EA earns about $1.5 billion a year before interest. The interest is bigger than the earnings. The promise to lenders So EA promised its lenders $700 million a year in cost cuts. $170 million of that is called organizational efficiencies. This week, it meant 400 jobs. The other side Now, the other side. BioWare's recent games struggled. Anthem was shut down. Almost every big publisher has cut jobs since 2023, and EA says fewer, bigger games are the plan. Not just the games. The loan. Struggling games didn't help. But the loan set the bill: $1.8 billion a year. And the loan is still there.
